This Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is a minimally invasive chest surgery that removes part of the diseased lung and lymph nodes. In video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), a small tube called a thoracoscope is inserted through a small incision (cut) between the ribs. At the end of the tube is a small camera. This allows the surgeon to see the entire rib cage without opening the chest or spreading the ribs. The surgeon then inserts specially designed instruments through one or two additional small incisions to remove lung tissue. In addition to lung cancer surgery, the VATS technique can be used for other types of chest surgery involving the lungs, esophagus, thymus, pleura, or pericardium.
